During these difficult times of social distancing and self-quarantine, there has been a dramatic increase in online activities by children, and a heightened concern by parents and educators for their safety. Kids and teens are unable to go to school, or participate in sports or other activities, and instead spend many hours in the online world. This webinar will provide ICAC members and other child protection professionals with tools and resources to help parents and educators create a safer environment for all children.
How many times have you heard someone say, “I’m so glad that we didn’t have smart phones/internet/technology like this when I was younger!”? We already recognize the risks, and therefore understand the need for continuous safety discussions with youth. This webinar will cover preparation for basic internet safety presentations in your schools and communities, with heavy emphasis on resources for content, ideas for engagement, and more in-depth safety resources for both parents and youth.
Self-Generated Content (sexting) sharing has become ever increasingly normative behavior for youth. This behavior can lead to Sextortion scams where offenders obtain explicit content and then pressure the victim to send money or send additional explicit content. Financial sextortion has become a significant danger for our youth, especially boys, and is often perpetrated by organized crime groups in Nigeria or the Ivory Coast. These threats can cause shame, fear and confusion and have led some victims to suicidal behaviors. This presentation will identify tactics used to target victims and will focus on awareness and preventive messaging to help provide protective factors for youth.
